07:24 pm - Star Trek
I am not really fond of the show, Lost, and really, really disliked some of the previews, which make it out to be flash actiony/Star Wars Prequelesque, and I will totally admit that I was bemoaning the new Trek movie ever since I heard rumors about it being in pre-production. It's going to suck, I said. It's going to be as bad as Nemesis if we're lucky, I said.

However, then it came out and everyone on my friends list saw it and loved it. Michelle actually went so far as to say I'd love it, too, which was REALLY BALLSY OF HER considering how picky I can be.

So Andy and I decided to go see it today because the not knowing was eating me up inside.

The first ten minutes or so, sans the bit with baby!Spock, were sort of a giant eye-roll (Anakin!Kirk in the convertible...), but some of my favorite Trek episodes (Piece of the Action) and movies (Voyage Home) have a lot of eye-roll-inducing moments, and Michelle is right - the fact that it is AU does make everything okay.

I really disliked the interior design of the Romulan ship. That's totally nitpicking, I know, but I didn't. Nemesis (which is still not as offensive as Final Frontier for my money) completely raped the Romulans ("let's clone Picard, and then send him off with the REMANS and then he can come back and take over at the age of 16 with his big vampiresque butt-buddy and a ship that can destroy a whole planet.... never mind that the Enterprise A could also destroy a planet, so it's not really such big news..."), and this movie was a bit better about dealing with them. That said, I can handle the completely nonsensical ginormous mining vessel with an interior that is way too reminiscent of an H.R. Geiger painting in the same way I can handle the way First Contact gave the Borg a queen. It doesn't really make sense, but it looks cool and I know that's why they did it so okay. (Though, really. We've seen the interior of a lot of Romulan ships. When exactly did they develop crazy floating platforms that one has to jump to? It's a mining vessel, which can explain the squid-like exterior, but I wasn't buying the lack of feasible walkways. Am I the only one who was reminded of The Borg? I'm not sure when it became bad guy = dark = floating platforms and labyrinthine ship interiors, but I liked the Romulans best when they made more sense.)

Those were my annoyances. (Well, okay, Chekov being the Wesley Crusher-esque teen presence on the bridge crew for no real reason other than to have Chekov be comic relief also bothered me. It was a little too cameo, but I can let go. I guess at one point the Federation decided that every ship needs a precocious kid genius in order to function. I love Chekov, don't get me wrong, but he wasn't in the first season of TOS and I care too much about these things.)

Basically, I went into the movie with [info]iibnf's statement in mind - trying to judge it not as Trek, but as really solid AU Trek Fanfiction. And in that sense, it passes with flying colors. True love for the source material was evident (every time something might have bothered me, there was some reference to TOS or TAS or the novels that made me smile). Solid acting (even from the kid playing Kirk, whose look I liked the least). Interesting take on the characters. I enjoyed it.

Now, if the sequel has Janice Rand, then I'll be all kinds of happy. Barring that, it could be a film version of the novel Black Fire and just be balls-out ridiculous. I'm pretty sure that would be the final nail in the coffin of this franchise, but I'D think it was great. XD

Also, Michelle, I figured it out - In one of the previews, the scenes are cut in a way to imply that Uhura is the shadowed woman in mid coitus with young!Kirk in the dark. So I was kind of bitterly waiting for her to put out from the moment she appeared. When it turned out to be an Orion cadet in that scene instead, I was SUDDENLY OKAY with movie!Uhura. Like magic. You were right. I tried to split as many hairs as I could, but overall even I cannot deny that it was a good flick. It did not suck. And I didn't think that was possible. o.O I'd put it below Search for Spock, but above Generations. About on par with First Contact. Better than Undiscovered Country and Insurrection (which are both dumb but entertaining). Way better than Final Frontier and Nemesis. Not nearly as good as Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, or Motion Picture. Totally ownable (I cannot stress enough how much I disliked Final Frontier and Nemesis, btw, so I'm just going to say it again).

Is this where I said "I told you so"? Oh, wait. I think I just did!

Haha. Anyway. I'm glad you liked it! I remember getting bored halfway through Nemesis and I don't know if I've even SEEN Final Frontier? I'm not up on a lot of the Trek, to be honest. I've sat through a lot of shows because of Adam, but not many of the movies (especially TOS movies).

I agree with you about the Romulan ship. It was cool to look at, but it was a mess on the inside. It was a battleground, I swear. Just so much going on and it was sort of confusing to figure out, just like the Borg ship.

I tried to make Adam explain to me WHY they've changed the Romulans so many times. I also like them when they looked nearly identical to the Vulcans.

I downloaded a cam version and I'm going to watch it again, purely for the cheese.

Yes, you told me so. I was totally misled by those awful previews and refused to listen to anything else. XD

Romulans and Vulcans are nearly the same race. Basically, Vulcans split off way back when Vulcan Jesus decided to form a pacifist movement. Some of them didn't like that, and decided to embrace their emotions and go off and colonize a planet on their own (Rome... I mean... Romulus). So Romulans are Vulcans without the logical disciplines. They're a very militaristic race, and they dig the finer things in life, really good at spreading but are a little too self-centered (NOT UNLIKE ROMANS). So Romulans should look identical to Vulcans. It's okay that they developed some physical changes (like in Next Gen they got the upper nose ridge, but still kept the same bowl haircut tradition), but for the most part it's more striking if they're similar.

In Next Gen, they made the Romulans less into comfy chairs and seductive hot as hell commanders and more into plain grey quilted uniforms and cloning (wtf, Tasha Yar plot?). Admittedly, this has some basis in the books, what with Phoenix/cloning technology and blah blah blah the Romulans ain't too bright. In Nemesis, they decided that the Romulans developed a slave sub-race on one of their moons called REMANS, who look just like Nosferatu, and then gives them a cloned Teen!Picard and lets them take over the council for reasons unknown (that are somewhat explained in the deleted scenes, but since those scenes were deleted, I don't count them... it's still dumb). Now, I guess, future Romulans embrace Reman hair loss and get all modern primitive with the tattooin'.

Now, in TOS they borrowed Klingon ships. So I guess in the future they borrow some design sense from the borg for some reason? The Romulans seemed to be really into sleek design. Practical. With maybe some draperies and shit to make it look classy. But now they're more into dangling spider cables and floating platforms that you have to take flying leaps to get to. Iunno. It makes sense that the Borg would have a totally alien ship, but the Romulan technological advancement - like the Klingons - was always kind of neck and neck with the Federation. We got warp before them, they got cloaking before us... and all of our ships had a similar, boxy interior with fancy automatic doors that make the same woosh noise.

I love the Romulans, because I have a MASSIVE GIRL CRUSH on the Romulan Commander in TOS. Two of the best TOS episodes imo are Balance of Terror (the first conflict between the Federation and the Romulans, where you - and the crew of the Enterprise - get the shock that they look identical to Vulcans) and The Enterprise Incident, where Spock seduces the Romulan Commander so that Kirk - disguised as a Romulan - can steal their cloaking device. In both episodes, the Romulans are presented as intelligent and honorable enemies (with stupid helmets) who would make equally powerful allies. In Nemesis, they're kind of retards. So my FLAMING HATRED for Nemesis is largely based in that. Though the movie has about a billion other technical errors as well (the dune buggy scene... omg the dune buggy scene).

In Final Frontier, Spock's fat, bearded half-brother Sybok decides to hijack their ship in order to go find God. Wackiness ensues! This movie has about five solid good minutes in it. Four of them are at the beginning, when Kirk, Spock and McCoy are camping in Yosemite and share a "touching moment." In fact, I prefer to believe that the film just ends there.

I love Chekov, don't get me wrong, but he wasn't in the first season of TOS

Aw! I thought they worked rather cleverly around all such complaints by the film's universe being AU from -25 years onwards.

Oh, they were totally clever! Except that Chekov is way too young to be on the bridge crew, and I don't know how the Romulans offing Kirk's dad would make Chekov get promoted way faster? It was just very Wesley Crusher, without the excuse of his mother being on the ship.

One of my favorite novels is the explanation of how the Vulcan/Romulan split came about. Isn't that the one that has the ships computer gaining sentience also? It's been a long while since I have read it.
Final Frontier is an annoying, pos that almost killed the entire franchise. I regret paying money to see that.
AMC plays Nemesis about once a day so I have been watching it in bits and pieces for several days. Taken out of context and seen as separate scenes/vignettes it's actually pretty cool but put it all together and it just falls apart.
I am partial to Undiscovered Country.

It is okay to be partial to Undiscovered Country and/or Insurrection! Both were fun movies. They are the movie versions of episodes like Shore Leave. Not much depth of writing, and kind of dumb taken as a whole, but a lot of great sequences and totally worth a watch.

Final Frontier is something best forgotten (though it is totally canon that if you show Kirk a God, he's gonna wanna go find it and kill it).

You've pretty much said everything I already feel, but I do feel that one thing was very clever when it came to this movie. Looking at the credits, you'll see that Zachary Quinto is listed as "Spock", but Leonard Nimoy is listed as "Spock Prime". That, to me, sends a very clear message that as far as TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager are concerned, everything is still valid and still in-continuity because the events of this movie are very much an alternate universe, with the only exception being that Spock is probably considered missing/killed in action in the Prime Universe due to his decision (for some odd reason) to remain in the Alternate Universe. That was a brilliant move, as now the Trekkies who are complaining about the film don't have much of a leg to stand on.

I do wonder what the Star Trek people will do now when it comes to future television shows and movies. Will we see a show or another movie based on the Alternate Universe, or is this a one-shot and stories of the Prime Universe will be told again?

And what does this bring the universe count to? There's Prime, Alternate, Mirror, the other alternate universe where the Klingons never make peace with the Federation, the other OTHER alternate universe where Voyager takes a few decades to get home, the other OTHER other universe where...

All of the actors have been contracted for a sequel to this film, that will probably continue its events, scheduled for release in 2011.

Spock Prime should give them a warning. "You know, in a few years you're going to find this guy floating with his buddies out in space? Might not wanna defrost that one. Let someone else handle it."

It redeemed MANY things about movie!Uhura that she did not even consider going for Kirk, though a friend and I were also saying sadly to each other that it's sad she is no longer (nominally) African, and seems to have been made slightly more of a Feisty Action Girl. However, really, it was slight, and they did an AMAZINGLY potentially irritating thing very well with her; like most aspects of the film, it came very, very close to being excruciating while ending up pretty good.

You know what fascinated me? Those thermal shirts they had as part of their uniforms, with the little Starfleet symbol worked into the weave. How in God's name do you replicate that for cosplay?
